Carolina Take a drive in the country From the March 26, 2001 Issue of New York The North Carolina golf town of Pinehurst is a riot of colors: blooming dogwoods, towering pines, blazing azaleas, and, yes, eye-searing plaid pants. Book a package at the town's namesake, the Pinehurst Resort, which has hosted numerous PGA tournaments, including the U.S. Open, on its No. 2 course (designed by Donald Ross and ranked sixth in the world by Golf magazine). With more than 40 golf courses in the surrounding county, you're bound to find at least one hole that you can't blame for your bogey. Squeeze in as many rounds as possible on the challenging Pine Needles and Talamore, as well as Pinehurst's No. 6 and No. 7. Golf widows (or widowers) can drive to nearby Seagrove, to meet the region's renowned potters and buy pieces sold out of wooden backyard sheds. And everyone should wander through the shaded, twisting streets in the heart of the village. Stop in for a fresh orangeade or a thick milkshake at the Pinehurst Sundry, an intimate, Old South soda fountain. For more substantial refreshment, try the authentic southern fish fry at Mama's Kitchen in nearby Vass, where you can tuck into steaming hush puppies and popcorn shrimp. -- LOGAN HILL |
