Infinitesimal Light and Magic
Before there was high-def or CGI Beowulf, there was, well, this. In Our Second Date, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy re-create a scene from Jean-Luc Godard’s 1967 film Week End, taking a decidedly low-tech approach. The meticulously crafted miniature rotates at a snail’s pace before a system of snakelike cameras, and, while far from realistic, the projected image is better than you might expect. This piece is part of MoMA’s small but excellent exhibition “Automatic Update,†a fun look at antiquated (i.e. nineties) tech, up on the second floor through September 3. —Rachel Wolff
