Hollywood Labor Update: Writers Strike Called!

After a last-minute offer from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers failed to materialize before the Writers Guild’s contract expired Wednesday, WGA leaders have announced plans to strike. Over 2,000 writers turned up at the Los Angeles Convention Center last night — Nikki Finke reports that many people had to stand, prompting fears of another chair shortage — to boo producers, reiterate their demands, and generally avoid the smog for a couple hours. The exact time and date of the strike has yet to be set but will likely begin just as soon as WGA picketers find non-union labor to write some clever slogans for their signs.
