To close the show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria last night, Madonna recruited Iggy Pop and the Stooges to perform versions of songs “Burnin’ Up†and “Ray of Light†(the latter is above, helpfully recorded and uploaded to YouTube by some benevolent person with a television and a camera phone). And if Billy Joel’s speech inducting John Mellencamp didn’t bum everybody out (“Let’s face it. Nobody’s selling records anymore. The record industry died before you did. Congratulations, Johnâ€), we bet this probably did the trick. Just look at poor Iggy! (Along with notable omissions like Rush and “Weird Al†Yankovic, Pop and the Stooges themselves continue to be ignored by the RRHoF.) At least it was better than crowding 80 musicians onstage to play “Blue Suede Shoes†for 45 minutes, sort of.
