‘Watchmen’ Fans Might Finally Have Something to Be Disappointed With: a ‘Watchmen’ Video Game!

Amid last week’s excitement over the new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Watchmen movie, there was a palpable feeling of disappointment for some fans of the original graphic novel. Not in the trailer itself — which makes the movie look awesome, like a faithfully lensed, live-action version of the comic — but probably more in the fact that the guy who made 300 seems to have pulled it off and we’ll have very little to complain about when this thing hits theaters next March (even if super-grumpy nerds like us still sort of wish we could’ve seen Paul Greengrass’s version). But fear not! Now, MTV reports that a video-game adaptation of Watchmen is in the works.

And when was the last time a movie video-game adaptation turned out to be any good? GoldenEye for Nintendo 64, probably? MTV says the Watchmen one will be a newly written prequel to the main story (Alan Moore will be so excited!), set in the seventies and following Rorschach and Nite Owl as they beat up bad guys in alleys or something. Though it looks “sharp enough to be a full-scale production built on a modern gaming graphics engine,†it’ll actually be released as a short, downloadable game (for PC, XBox 360, and Playstation 3 — no Wii!). It could be totally awesome! But more likely not. Yes, we will probably buy it and devote hours upon hours to its completion, but that certainly doesn’t mean we have to like it!
