Double Time: Anne Hathaway will play Judy Garland in both a Broadway and a big-screen biopic, being adapted by the Weinstein Co. from Gerald Clarke’s biography Get Happy. It’s an unorthodox move, although apparently Hathaway — who’s doing Shakespeare in the Park this summer — has long flirted with a Broadway production. There are, as of yet, no writers, directors, or librettists attached, and it is unclear which version will come first. Does this mean no PSH? [Variety]
Seaside Rock: Liv Tyler will star in the indie rom-com The Romantics, written and directed by Galt Niederhoffer and adapted from Niederhoffer’s novel of the same name (and coming from an original idea of Niederhoffer’s). Taking place at a wedding celebration, the flick features Tyler as a maid of honor who has a long-standing rivalry with the bride over the groom. Because it is described as a “seaside†wedding celebration, we’re assuming someone gets comically pushed over the side of a cliff. [Variety]
Huh?: New Regency has acquired the rights to the comic book Formula: Ghost of the Wasteland, with an eye toward having Valkryie’s Bryan Singer direct. Formula, which takes place in a future world where fighter jets are replaced by pilots in “racing exo-suits,†revolves around a character who discovers his “bloodline has the power to change society.†Does this mean no eye-patch-wearing Nazis? [Variety]
Who Would Put a Hit Out on Ashton Kutcher?!: Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara have joined the action comedy Five Killers. The movie stars Ashton Kutcher as a top hit man who falls in love with a computer tech (Katherine Heigl); they settle down in the suburbs, only to have to go on the lam years later when Kutcher discovers he’s got a hit out on him. Like those plot elements, Selleck and O’Hara, who will play Kutcher’s doting parents, have been borrowed from other, better movies. [HR]
The Heming-Way: Andy Garcia has scripted and will direct the indie Hemingway & Fuentes, focusing on the relationship between Hemingway and his fishing-boat captain, Gregorio Fuentes, in the last decade of the writer’s life. Co-written by Hemingway’s niece Hilary Hemingway, it will most likely star Garcia as Fuentes, Annette Benning as Hemingway’s wife Mary Walsh, and Anthony Hopkins as the legendary writer (Hemingway, not Andy Garcia). [HR]
Smashed: Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, who was the only original member of the band besides Billy Corgan in the post-reunion era, has quit. It’s unclear why, although Corgan has promised to continue the Pumpkins solo, with plans to record this spring. Uh-oh: The last time Corgan recorded something solo, his album cover came out looking like this. Ahhh!! [Variety]
