If anyone thought that the box-office failure of Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience last month meant the tragic end of the tween domination of culture, we have terrific news: Hannah Montana: The Movie earned an estimated $34 million over the weekend, and a Zac Efron–hosted Saturday Night Live scored a 5.1 rating, beating everything in prime time and improving on last week’s Seth Rogen–hosted episode (hardly Sarah Palin numbers, but still).
It still remains to be seen how many of those who tuned in to Efron’s actually-pretty-great performance on SNL will pay to see him in 17 Again on Friday night. But Hollywood bean counters are no doubt pleased to learn that teenagers aren’t yet sick of all stars of chaste, tween-based musical entertainment — just the abstinent ones, apparently!
