Although Star Trek currently has a 94 percent Tomatometer ranking, it’s not surprising to see that a few contrarian opinions about J.J. Abrams’s latest film have emerged. Roger Ebert proclaims that “Like so many franchises, it’s more concerned with repeating a successful formula than going boldly where no Star Trek has gone before.†Meanwhile, Armond White of the New York Press takes his criticism of the film a step further: “Abrams directs action where you can’t see anything — just blur, like in Cloverfield … Star Trek isn’t a movie so much as a confirmation of TV’s cultural dominance. It’s watchable, yet still terrible cinema.†[Roger Ebert/Sun Times, NY Press]
