That hardly seems like a good idea after what happened last time — but maybe! As Roman Polanski spends his third day in a prison cell awaiting extradition to the U.S., following his surprise apprehension in Zurich, Switzerland, on Saturday, France and Poland (the two countries in which he holds citizenship) are calling for his release on bail and asking American officials to help make it happen. This morning, a spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry told the AP that an arrangement was “not entirely excluded†under Swiss law, though in the unlikely event that it were granted, it would be on the strict condition that the director not leave Switzerland, obviously. A Polish foreign minister has reportedly formally requested Hillary Clinton’s help in the matter, but French officials have taken the less tactful route of telling reporters that Polanski’s arrest was “a bit sinister†and that there’s “a scary America that has just shown its face.†So let’s just say that lifetime achievement award will probably be sitting in storage for a while.
