Rihanna has, quite understandably, remained mum on the horrible sequence of events that occurred on February 8, 2009. We’ve all seen and heard Chris Brown’s succession of awkward apologies, both on YouTube and his memorably bow-tied appearance on Larry King Live, but Rihanna herself had yet to publicly speak out about the situation — until this morning, that is. Good Morning America aired the first of a two-part interview conducted by Diane Sawyer, an interview that thankfully included no references to her new album dropping November 23, but one in which she repeatedly refers to her former boyfriend as “that person,†and one where she implores other domestic-violence sufferers to “Eff love.â€
While we don’t get any details from Rihanna about what exactly went down that evening — you’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s GMA to get that info — the interview does show that she’s still working her way through a nasty case of victim’s guilt. “That’s embarrassing. That’s embarrassing that that’s the type of person that I fell in love with,†Rihanna explains to Diane Sawyer. We realize that she’s being truthful in this moment, and that embarrassment is part of the natural cycle of dealing with something so painful (especially in such a public forum), but we hope that Rihanna one day realizes she, in fact, has nothing to be embarrassed about. Regardless of the sequence of events that went down in Brown’s rented silver Lamborghini, she is the victim in this situation and we can only hope she’s continuing to explore various means of rebuilding the confidence that helped propel her to superstardom in the first place (be that individually, through therapy, or what have you).
