Nine may be killing it on the award circuit, but that won’t stop the Weinstein Co. from reducing the number of theaters carrying Rob Marshall’s musical over the next couple weeks. Last weekend Nine played in about 1,400 theaters around the country. That number will be reduced by five to six hundred in the coming weeks. This doesn’t bode well for the film’s ability to turn a profit, especially after it only made $5.5 million last weekend as Hollywood was setting an all-time record for box office sales.
The studio remains hopeful that award buzz will buoy attendance but we don’t really see this turning around unless they recut the movie to include more Fergie.
