French-born sculptor and artist Louise Bourgeois, known for her “psychologically charged†abstract sculptures, drawings, and prints, died Monday in Manhattan. Many of her famous works involved spiders, including the 30-foot-high stainless steel Maman sculpture on display at the Tate Modern in London. Bourgeois didn’t gain fame until the later part of her career, fueled in part by the inspiring effect her work had on younger artists. She died of a heart attack at the age of 98. [NYT]
