Seemingly every prominent young actress is aiming for the coveted leading role in Sony’s upcoming The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher. The film, planned as the first of a three-movie franchise and based on Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s books, has Hollywood’s most buzzed-about begging for the part of Lisbeth Salander: Carey Mulligan took the film’s screenwriter Steve Zallian out to lunch, and Ellen Page wrote a “heartfelt note†to producer Scott Rudin. Additionally, Kristen Stewart, Mia Wasikowska, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Thirlby, and Scarlett Johansson are all reportedly “circling†the part. However, they all may be out of luck, as Fincher is considering going with an unknown actress for the role, Deadline says, and Sony thinks the material is strong enough that it “doesn’t need†a big-name actress. However, perplexingly, apparently the studio doesn’t think the material precludes the need for a big-name male lead — Sony has offered that part to Brad Pitt.
