For the latest installment of his Record Club series, in which he covers classic albums in their entirety and posts them on his website, Beck has deigned to record versions of every track from Yanni’s 7 million–selling New Age smash Live at the Acropolis (which, as Maura Johnston points out today, was released on the same day as Beck’s Mellow Gold in 1994). Why? Who knows! The first track isn’t bad, though. He’s invited Tortoise to play most of the instruments, while Thurston Moore improvises catchy new lyrics to instrumental “Santorini†(“God of fire! … Cars! Piles of heated metal! Hot, hot, hot, hot … “). “Keys to Imagination†is going to be epic.
