Oprah Winfrey’s long-gestating cable network, OWN, just got a lot more interesting: Rosie O’Donnell has signed on to host a daily New York–based talk show for the channel. O’Donnell had been pitching a talk format to local TV stations but instead ended up signing with OWN. Local broadcasters hate taking risks, and were no doubt worried about just what kind of show the sometimes-controversial ex–Queen of Nice might be planning, even though O’Donnell and her partners had made it clear she wasn’t looking to turn into the female Keith Olbermann. But a cable network like OWN can afford to take a few more chances; what’s more, since Winfrey has said she’s not planning to do a daily talk show on OWN (though she will be seen in a number of projects), O’Donnell should serve as a big attention magnet for the network. Both OWN and the Rosie show launch next year.
