Fox has just ordered a sketch show, the tentatively-titled Jamie Foxx Project. Can a new sketch comedy show survive in the age of internet videos?
Fox also had In Living Color, a classic sketch show that actually launched Jamie Foxx’s career. But that was 20 years ago. Today, it seems like a tough sell to expect people used to watching sketches one at a time, with the ability to bail on any ones they don’t like at their leisure, to sit through 30 straight minutes of back-to-back sketches.
Sure, SNL is still around and doing pretty well. But it clearly has a unique set of circumstances that keep it alive. Can a brand new, possibly prime-time sketch show work today, even if it’s got an A-list movie star as its face? I guess we’ll see. Jamie Foxx Project is set to premiere “during the 2010-2011 season.â€
