Eric Fischl’s erotic nude paintings have long fetched top-dollar from top-tier art collectors and celebrities, but it’s quite a shock to see the painter’s kinky taste for sun-dappled nudes on an surprisingly graphic official poster for the Hamptons International Film Festival, which runs October 7 through 11. (What will all those parents say when they see it on the streets?) Like the festival, Fischl’s work has always probed the eroticism of the wealthy, and he’s no stranger to controversy. His Tumbling Woman statue of a woman’s body crumpled in on itself spurred controversy when it was installed in Rockefeller Center in the aftermath of September 11 (it was eventually covered up). “We are very excited to be once again partnering with Eric Fischl, one of the most important artists of his generation — as well as a local Long Islander,†says the fest’s executive director Karen Arikian. “His work is bold, controversial, and provocative, and we are honored to have him as the this year’s poster artist.†For the image in all its crotch-grabbing, full-frontal glory, click through.
