Over the years, the otherwise unimpeachable Pixar has taken some guff for never making a film with a female lead. (Even Joss Whedon has chimed in.) Now, to go along with its first movie with a solo girl protagonist, Brave, about a princess who’d rather do archery than princessing, it’s hired its first female director, Brenda Chapman, who will also write the film.
