Eminem Takes on Gay Critics, People Who Can’t Rhyme ‘Orange’

Anyone looking for fireworks from last night’s 60 Minutes pairing of Eminem with the newly emboldened, Dilemma-shaming Anderson Cooper would be mostly disappointed. The rapper insisted that he only used homophobic language because other rappers already were, and when asked if he hated gay people, answered, “I don’t have any problem with nobody, you know what I mean? Like, I’m just whatever.†It is funny that people would think Eminem was the sort of person who pursued grudges against people through his music — where would they get that from? Still, Em was much more fired up about a childhood fallacy that still haunts him to this day: “People say that the word ‘orange’ doesn’t rhyme with anything, and that kind of pisses me off, because I can think of a lot of things that rhyme with orange,†he insisted to Cooper. “If you’re taking the word at face value and you just say ‘orange,’ nothing is gonna rhyme with it exactly. If you enunciate it and make it more than one syllable — or-ange — you could say, like, ‘I put my or-ange four-inch door hinge in stor-age and ate por-ridge with Ge-orge.’†“Door hinge†was kind of a gimme, dude.
