When was the last time you were truly psyched on a Farrelly Brothers movie? 2005’s Fever Pitch has its fans, but you’d have to go back to 2001’s Shallow Hal to find a movie that retained some of the screwball brilliance of their early hits (Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, of course, although Kingpin will forever have the biggest piece of our hearts). Will Hall Pass break the streak? Well, at least from the trailer, it seems like casting Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as married, sexually frustrated nerds who get a “hall pass†— a one-week furlough from their relationships with attractive television actresses Jenna Fischer and Christina Appleagate — and then have no idea what to do with it was something of an inspired choice, even if Wilson is forced to wear nerdiness-connoting short-sleeve dress shirts the whole time. Bonus: Steven Merchant as their gawky pal, Richard Jenkins as a leathery skirt-chasing old-timer, and the immortal wisdom of Mrs. Joy Behar.
