Gallagher’s Manager: ‘I respect what Marc was trying to do, but he did it in a douchey way.’

I chatted with Gallagher’s manager Craig Marquardo to find out what happened. “I don’t think he knew how aggressive Maron would be,†Marquardo said, adding that Gallagher is not at all sorry for walking out on the interview and that Gallagher “doesn’t care.†In fact, Marquardo relayed that after Gallagher left the interview he was seen being mobbed by fans on the street, where the comic took pictures with fans and signed autographs. “Where would you rather be?†Marquardo said.Marquardo added, “I respect what Marc was trying to do, but he did it in a douchey way.â€But Maron doesn’t see it exactly that way. “I’m in the game of conversation,†Maron tells me. “I don’t want to be talked down to. If I was being douchey it was a reaction to being condescended to and dismissed.â€

Yesterday’s most entertaining comedian was Gallagher, but not for any jokes he was telling. After a disastrous interview on Marc Maron’s super-popular WTF Podcast that had him storming out of the interview, one had to question just what was going on with the guy. His manager talked to Punchline Magazine about how the interview happened and why Gallagher walked out.Anyone familiar with Maron’s interviewing style wasn’t surprised by the interview, and it’s tough to argue that Maron was the one out of line. Gallagher continually yelled over him and, before walking out, dismissed many working comedians and said that they should all be looking up to him. If anyone came off like a douche, it was him.

But in his defense, he apparently walked into that interview not having any idea who Maron is or what his podcast is all about. If he had done even a cursory bit of research, he would have known that Maron’s interviews tend to skip the jokes and dive deep into the often dark inner lives of comedians. It’s what makes the podcast so interesting and popular. And while we didn’t get a full Gallagher interview, it seems like, in a roundabout way, we did get that raw look at Gallagher’s life after all.
