X-Men: First Class Trailer: When Charles Met Erik

The trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, a reboot of the franchise that goes back to the sixties, when Professor X and Magneto were still pals named Charles (James McAvoy) and Erik (Michael Fassbender), has arrived. JFK, giving a speech about the Cuban Missile Crisis, basically narrates over a droning, moody soundtrack as images of Charles, Magneto, and some other early X-Men (the Beast turning Beasty, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert in a period trench, Jennifer Lawrence turning all bristly blue as Mystique, etc.) flash by. In keeping with The Dark Knight school of superhero movies, there’s more angst than fun here — and not even one really quippy bit of dialogue or big explosion to lighten the mood. That said, Fassbender is clearly going to make a dope Magneto.
