Is every recent movie or TV show pitched to girls about the desire to be famous? You’ve got the have-it-both-ways Hollywood stardom of Hannah Montana, the aspirations to fame of Glee and iCarly, and now there’s Monte Carlo, which is essentially a remake of the “European princess for a day†narrative of The Lizzie McGuire Movie (yes, we’re going there with the Lizzie McGuire callback) but with Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, and Katie Cassidy starring. Gomez plays an ordinary girl who realizes while on vacation abroad with her two besties that she resembles a famous heiress who wants a break from her own rich-bitch life. The solution is simple: Gomez will take her place, and then she can treat Meester and Cassidy to an expensive trip to Monte Carlo where they can wear all the dresses and shoes they want! And so they do, and Glee’s Cory Monteith is also involved. The story is simple, but the meta-narrative is tricky: See this movie, and you can pretend to be famous like these famous girls who are pretending to be girls who want to be famous.
