Tree of Life Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life scored the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday. The festival’s runner-up Grand Prize was a tie between Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for the drama The Kid With a Bike and Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan for his thriller Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. Meanwhile, even though Melancholia director Lars von Trier was booted from the festival, Melancholia star Kirsten Dunst, who covered her face at von Trier’s infamous press conference, won Best Actress. Best Director: Nicolas Winding Refn for Drive, “an arty action thriller†with Ryan Gosling.
Best Actor: Jean Dujarin for The Artist, “an ode to the silent-film era.â€
Prix du Jury (Jury Prize): Maïwenn for Polisse, a French police procedural.
Best Screenplay: Joseph Cedar, for Footnote, a drama about a rivalry between Talmudic scholars.
Camera d’Or (Best First Feature): Pablo Gorgelli, for Las Acacias.
