Despite a Metacritic score fifteen points below the first Cars, Cars 2’s bow earned $8 million more than the original’s first weekend for $68 million overall. Apparently the Pixar Streak isn’t as broken as people thought, at least financially. Elsewhere, Cameron Diaz’s Bad Teacher had a good haul, placing second and taking in $31 million. And when you combine that with Bridesmaids’ continued longevity (eighth overall with another $5.3 million for a total of nearly $150 million), it’s been a very good summer for lady-led movies. Ryan Reynolds’s summer, meanwhile, not quite as good; Green Lantern lost 66 percent of its audience this weekend, placing third overall with $18.3 million.
