The Cabin in the Woods is a little movie that’s meant to pack some scares, but the real horror is how long it’s been on the shelf. Co-written by Joss Whedon and starring Chris Hemsworth, the movie began filming in March 2009, but financial woes at MGM and a 3D post-conversion contributed to continual missed release dates. Now, Lionsgate has come to the horror comedy’s aid and slotted the movie for an April 13, 2012 release date, more than three years after it began production. If there’s any upside to the long delay, it’s that both Whedon and Hemsworth have seen their profiles lifted significantly in the interim thanks to Marvel – in fact, the Whedon-directed, Hemsworth-starring superhero crossover The Avengers will come out just three weeks after Cabin, on May 4. At least it should simplify their promotional duties!
