Some pundits were pissed when news broke that Seth Gordon’s 2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters would be remade as a narrative feature, but to us, it seemed like a fun idea: The story of two men competing to be the Donkey Kong champion of the world was full of colorful characters (like braggadocious nerd Billy Mitchell) that would surely be catnip to actors, and a straight-ahead remake would open the narrative up even further. Except that what they’ve got planned is a little more superfluous than that: “I’ve done some work on Modern Family and The Office and have worked in this doc style, and so that inspired me to say, instead of doing a traditional narrative feature script, what if we did the remake in the doc style?†Gordon told the Playlist. “What doors would that open?†Our guess: the same ones that were opened by the first movie, which was already told documentary-style?
