Even with a star-studded bill, it was clear who the headliners were of the first day of Lollapalooza 2011: Coldplay. The band closed out the night with a 90-minute set, which sounds like it was the typical bombastic Coldplay set we’ve all come to expect from the band (especially post Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends), filled with theatrics and a laundry lists of songs you’ve heard thousands of times over the last decade whether or not you wanted to. Mixed in with the hits they’ve built their reputation on were two new songs, which will conceivably be on the band’s upcoming fifth album. The new songs, “Hurts Like Heaven†and “MX,†are just as anthem-y as we’ve come to expect from late-era Coldplay, but with a poppier, jangly touch. As with most concert footage, the audio quality’s not too great but still indicates that the band is striving to evolve sonically, even after ten years and however many millions of records sold.
