Big Miracle, the based-on-a-true-story movie about a local Alaskan effort to save three trapped gray whales, was originally titled Everybody Loves Whales. It’s really hard to argue with that statement. A Drew Barrymore-John Krasinski whale movie! If that basic premise does not have you cancelling all plans for February 3, 2012, then please consider the trailer, which contains the following wonders: a Krasinski local news report about avocados; the Alaskan governor (played by Stephen Root) glad-handing someone in a furry whale costume; three whales named Fred, Wilma, and Bam Bam; a camouflaged Dermot Mulrooney lecturing Ted Danson about Arctic ice; John Corbett in an Eskimo parka yelling “We can’t keep up with the ice;†and Drew Barrymore donning scuba gear to rescue the baby whale. (If you’re a crier, “Where’s Bam Bam?†is probably the point at which you will need a box of tissues.) We won’t even complain about the inclusion of the overused “Moth’s Wings†in the trailer, because the song includes the lyrics “Buried deep under the water†— just like the whales! Exceptional. Snow Dogs for Whales, we salute you.
