London Boulevard has a lot of heavy-hitters, both in front of and behind the camera: It’s the directorial debut of William Monahan, who won the Oscar for writing The Departed, and it stars Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley, and a deep roster of British acting talents that includes Ray Winstone, David Thewlis, Anna Friel, and Ben Chaplin. Still, as this trailer makes clear, all that is in service of another stylish “ex-con pulled in for one last job†tale, where the freshly sprung Farrell is drawn back into the criminal underworld despite his attempts to go straight for Knightley (and it’s got to be a bummer for an actress like Knightley when there’s a title card in your movie’s trailer that literally just identifies you as “the Girlâ€). There’s a wealth of snappy dialogue to spruce things up and it all looks very watchable, but critics across the pond weren’t kind to the movie when it opened there last year; will Anglophile pundits in the States be more likely to give it a break?
