Madonna wasn’t pleased when M.I.A. pulled focus during her Super Bowl performance by flipping the bird, but what did fellow guest star Nicki Minaj think about the stunt? “My first feeling was disappointment,†Minaj told Ryan Seacrest this week. “I love M.I.A. and I don’t really want to say anything that is the wrong thing, but me personally, I couldn’t see myself doing it, just for the respect for Madonna.†Minaj is no stranger to attention-getting stunts on stage, but she says there was a distinction to be made at the Super Bowl: “I’m a cuckoo lady too, but … there are fines that go into these things, and I just thought, ‘Oh my God, I hope they don’t penalize Madonna.’ In hindsight, Madonna knows the artist that M.I.A. is, and it was her decision to take the risk with all of us. We’re kinda all firecrackers and she took that risk, and she’s done some crazy things becoming the icon that she is.†(Incidentally, the middle-finger gesture may be the only hand motion Karmin didn’t make on Saturday Night Live this past weekend.
