No longer just the big studio movie that could, Hunger Games has morphed into an unstoppable behemoth of a moneymaker, topping the weekend box office for a third straight week. Even with the release of legitimate challengers like American Reunion and Titanic 3D, the Jennifer Lawrence-starring Suzanne Collins adaptation took in an estimated $33.5 million, bringing its domestic haul to a totally respectable $302 million ($460 million internationally). American Reunion and Titanic 3D didn’t do too shabbily either, with $21.5 million and $17.4 million, respectively, but neither was a match for the YA juggernaut. Rounding out the top five were Wrath of the Titans and Mirror, Mirror. Next week sees the release of Cabin in the Woods, but it’s not clear that it can bring the Hunger Games reign to an end. Unless of course everyone in America has already seen it. Even then, they’ll probably just go see it again.
