Can you cram every single idea in the whole world into one movie? Heck, you can cram them into one trailer! We present for your inspection a six-minute trailer for Cloud Atlas, adapted and directed by Tom Tykwer and Andy and Lana Wachowski. Love stories, (appropriately) Matrix-like ominous technology and architecture, old-timey ships, disasters, seventies-era Tom Hankses, music, freaky futuristic cafés, slow-motion explosions, a wistful Ben Whishaw, elder abuse, and an interlocking philosophy about dreams and purpose — this movie covers a lot of ground. All of the ground, maybe. Visually, the film looks overwhelmingly beautiful, but it remains to be seen whether it can capture the book’s sense of immersion in its stories, not just a sense of spectacle at its scale.
