The Dark Knight Rises, the end of one riveting saga, was kind enough to come packaged in theaters with a morsel of what comes next from writer David S. Goyer and Batman-helmer turned producer Christopher Nolan. Set to an Enya-like theme, this Man of Steel clip is packed with visuals as gripping as they are gritty, and as American as they are anything. Behold: Craggy coastline and seagulls; science fairs and eighteen-wheelers; a boat from The Perfect Storm and numerous shots of clotheslines; a happy ol’ dog and a bearded Henry Cavill. This is Superman’s U.S.A. Two nearly identical teasers are floating around with slightly different “you rule!†voiceovers from both Superman’s fathers — Earthling Kevin Costner and Kyptonian Russell Crowe. “You will give the people an ideal to strive towards … you will help them accomplish wonders,†Crowe’s Jor-El says here. We’ve got a year to speculate and hope for this one’s wonder status — as Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan reminded us from Comic-Con, Zack Snyder’s movies do make for great trailers, although the features themselves (300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, the Dawn of the Dead remake) have been a decidedly mixed bag.
