Two of our most versatile foreign thespians, Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, are surely deserving of a vacation, but things don’t go how they planned in The Impossible. Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), the characters played by McGregor and Watts have the misfortune of taking their family on a Thailand trip in 2005, and when that country’s devastating tsunami strikes, they’re split apart by the waves, struggling to find each other and remain alive. As glimpsed in the trailer, it’s potently realized stuff with tremendous special effects (and set to a sensitive Damien Rice cover of U2’s “Oneâ€), and though The Impossible comes out in theaters at the end of December, it’ll screen soon on the festival circuit. Will this ambitious drama hold water? We’ll see.
