At 6 p.m., Parisians began pouring onto rue du Saint-Honoré and the streets around it, where youthful labels like Kenzo, APC, and the ultimate mecca for lesbobos worldwide, Colette, rub shoulders with all the mythical French designers — Lanvin, Dior, and YSL. But the biggest excitement of the night was at Chanel’s rue Cambon headquarters, one of the brand’s three boutiques in the ‘hood. With the arrival of heavy lighting equipment, those waiting in the long line out front assumed their fashion god’s arrival was imminent. Preparation started for the advent of his Rolls Royce; “Karlito!” one roared. “Put on your most beautiful smile!” instructed another. They were clearly disappointed when Karl slithered in through a back door — turns out the lights were for French TV personality Mademoiselle Agnès, model and Vogue Paris editor-at-large Malgosia Bela, and Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Emanuelle Alt. After a brief in-store appearance, the women were joined back outside by Emanuelle’s (incredibly lucky) teenage son, escorted onto the back of a Chloé truck packed with cheerleaders, and whisked away, leaving the revelers to drink their free Champagne and try to catch whiffs of the fabulous fashion aura that trailed behind.

Hermine: Paris!
Nour: I'm from Tunisia.
What are you excited about tonight?
Both: Meeting people!
What do you love to spend money on?
Both: Shoes. Shoes. Shoes. High heels, of course!
What brand are you obsessed with right now?
Hermine: Steve Madden. I'm going on his website every day. Every day! I'm craving those wedge sneakers.
What's your shopping philosophy?
Hermine: As long as the credit card says yes, just go! Photo: Julien Babigeon

It's called Edible Selby, and it's a collection of 42 creative food people in their spaces all around the world. I'm launching it here in Colette.
Fashion people are obsessed with food lately!
Food is the new fashion.
Why are you launching the book in Paris and not in New York?
Because Sarah asked me. I did my last book launches here and my first gallery show here.
What do you buy when you're in Paris?
I buy food. I bring a lot of stuff back. I buy all my olive oil from Cedric, the guy from La tête dans les olives. He's actually serving olives here tonight. I bring them back in, like, gallon containers. Unfortunately you're not supposed to bring food through customs, so I have to eat all the cheese on the plane and that kind of stuff. The olive oil I bring back, but everything else gets eaten in flight.
How would you describe FNO?
Mayhem. I don't know how much shopping gets done on Fashion's Night Out. Everyone just wants free drinks. But that's cool. I'm all about [giving] people free drinks.
Are you excited about Fashion Week?
No, I don't go to Fashion Week. Photo: Julien Babigeon

This is Beauty to Go. It's special water, non-carbonated.
You live between Paris and New York, right?
I'm based in Paris and every month I go to New York for a week. In Paris, I live in St. Germain, and in New York, the Upper East Side.
Are you spending Fashion Week in Paris or New York?
I'm going to spend it in Paris and do a brief moment in N.Y. Next week I'm going there for two days and then I'm coming back here. I'm going to show everything here, in Paris.
Which city do you prefer?
Very hard to answer … I love both. Both are very different. Paris is more about quality of life. I'm Parisian, so everything about Paris I love: the food, the restaurants, the energy.
What's your favorite neighborhood for shopping in Paris?
St. Germain. What's your favorite store?
Other than Colette, I would say Acne. I'm a big fan. Especially of the new one in the Marai. The design is beautiful, very pure.
Why was Brazil one of your design inspirations this year?
Because for me Brazil is about colors, about happiness.
Are you working on anything at the moment?
Yes! Two things. I just did a bag for Balmain that is going to be sold in Paris at the Balmain store on rue François 1er and at the beginning of December in New York at Barneys. And I'm opening a shop! In a week! In St. Germain! 55 rue des Saints-Pères. I practically live above it. Photo: Julien Babigeon

This skirt I'm wearing. I bought it at Maje. I couldn't wait! I live upstairs from Maje. They set things aside for me; they've become kind of my personal stylists. I don’t have a very big closet since it's Paris. I just go downstairs.
Where are you from?
I'm from New York but I was in L.A. for a long time before moving to Paris a year ago. I came with two suitcases of all the wrong clothes. I brought all my best LuluLemons.
Is this your first FNO?
This is my first in Paris. It's like a dream come true. Now I live in Paris and work in fashion. Couldn't be more excited.
What are you obsessed with buying right now?
Everything, sadly. Right this moment I wanted to come into Colette to buy the little silver bullets of Not a Perfume by Juliette has a Gun.
What's your shopping philosophy?
If I don't love it, I don't bother. My girlfriends take a half-hour on one item of clothing. "Does it work, I'm not sure … " For me, if I don't try it on and do a little shimmy, I won't buy it. Photo: Julien Babigeon

I worked here for four and a half years, I left for three years to work at American Apparel, and I've been back for about two years.
You're Parisian?
I'm Parisian.
What's the Parisian look?
Every look is different. I'm more into street. There's no one Parisian look.
Where do you like to shop in Paris?
I actually like to do my shopping when I'm abroad, because we have everything here at Colette! But I do like to stop by Kokon Tozai and H&M.
What brands are you into lately?
I love Comme des Garçons; Sacai, another Japanese brand we sell here; and Givenchy.
What are you obsessed with buying?
Socks. Happy Socks. Or scarfs. Everything always very colorful, of course.
What's your favorite color?
Red.
What are you excited about tonight?
Blogging. I'm going to stay in the boutique, see what happens, and blog about it live. Photo: Julien Babigeon

I bought it from Pas Si Sage, a young designer that only has a site for right now and works from her home. Pas si sage because she's not a very well-behaved girl.
What do you do for a living?
I was a model before, and I stopped a year ago to work in interior design. I just started my own brand, Marrakech de Paris. I make a link between Oriental and Occidental designs.
Are you from Marrakech?
No, I was born in a little French countryside. I just go there for inspiration.
What city is your favorite for shopping?
Paris. There are tons of choices and the biggest designers are here. I love Paris for that but also Milan. Plus, I have friends who work in fashion in Milan.
Where do you go shopping in Paris?
I like Haussmann a lot. I also really like the little mall that's near where I live in Boulogne-Billancourt [a Paris suburb]. There are only chic boutiques there.
How would you describe your style?
Classic, with a little funky. But I don't like when you can see logos, I don't like prints. I like it when it's sober and simple.
Are you going to shop tonight?
No, I prefer to come during the day when the stores are empty. Tonight's more about being with people who love fashion.
What's your shopping philosophy?
I like it when I'm happy and when I'm not happy. When I'm not happy it lets me think about other things. I love shopping. J'adore faire du shopping.Photo: Julien Babigeon

Pascal: Maybe. I know Raphaël wants to buy some cologne from Costume National, and I want to go to American Apparel. For now, we're looking around.
What have you seen that you've liked?
Pascal: Paul Smith was very cute. We also stopped by Lalique; our friend is the head designer of jewelry there and we stopped by to see his amazing collection that just came out.
What's your shopping philosophy?
Pascal: Don't buy the first thing you see. Look around, see different pieces, and then decide. I like to mix essential, well-cut pieces with fun pieces.
Raphaël: My philosophy is the same, but the older I get the more classical my taste becomes. And I can spend lots of money on an item, but I wait to be sure I want it and to be sure it fits me and to be sure it matches with the rest of my wardrobe. I never buy immediately. Unless it's H&M.
What's the last nice item you bought?
Raphaël: A leather jacket from Iro. I had been looking for months. I tried it once, twice, and the third time I got it. Because it was almost the rent, so I had to give it a think.
Where'd you get your jacket?
Pascal: In L.A., in a very cute vintage store on Melrose Avenue. Everyone has a denim jacket, but mine has a little detail; the drawing on the back that makes it personal. I have no idea who it is. I'm looking for someone to tell me. I thought it was a younger Elvis, but then someone suggested Johnny Cash, or James Dean. But maybe not … I'm still wondering. I hope someone by the end of the night will recognize him. Photo: Julien Babigeon

Ye... Alexia, fourth-year med student, 20 years old, at Chanel (rue Cambon), 8:38 p.m. You still have time for shopping with medical school?
Yeah, but to tell the truth I mostly shop online. I'm kind of known at school for dressing up because I love that. The others are more workhorses. They're not really into it.
Talk about your tie.
I'm a huge fan of ties, of everything masculine actually: ties, bow ties, shirts, blazers … A few days ago I was at Zara with my boyfriend and there were tons of ties marked down, so I bought three. I love the mix of feminine and masculine. Since I normally wear skirts I try to pair them with little shoes, jackets, hats, blazers, anything for men.
Do you go shopping at Chanel?
Uh, no. Later in life, why not! Right now I'm just happy looking at it.
How would you describe FNO?
Exciting! Everything we see on TV, in newspapers, is here. There are famous people, photographers, Karl Lagerfeld … it's fun! This is my third year coming. Photo: Julien Babigeon

Did you ask for this kind of braid?
No, they proposed it. I'm very happy with it. It only took ten to fifteen minutes. It was super fast.
How would you describe the event?
It's great to see so many people out.
If you could go shopping anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I really like London. They're really into fashion, rock.
What do you like about shopping in Paris?
There are lots of little boutiques, independent designers, so you can have your own look.
What was the last thing you bought?
A T-shirt at Zara.
What do you love to buy?
Handbags. I have four from Lancel. Photo: Julien Babigeon

It's her first and my second time here.
Do you want to work in fashion when you're older?
I do, but it's pretty complicated. It's not easy to find a job in fashion.
You came with other friends?
Yeah, a group of about ten of us.
Did you buy anything yet tonight?
No, just looked.
What stores do you like?
Colette, Sandro … a little bit of everything. Trendy brands.
What's been the best part of the night?
Colette. And Chanel. We saw Karl Lagerfeld!! And the editor of Vogue. Photo: Julien Babigeon

Yeah, Elite Boisée.
Did you do any shopping tonight?
No, tonight was just about talking to people about Elite Boisée, the concept we're in the process of launching. Finding interesting contacts who we can share our concept with.
What's up with you all wearing glasses?
It's to complete the look. Accessorize right up to our eyes.
How do you define your style?
We don't have one style, we’re not satisfied with just one style. We explore all wardrobes, all universes. For example, I'm wearing what we call expérimental, things you're not used to seeing in the street. He's wearing what we call the boisé style, the wooden style. Shades of brown, rugged materials … And he's wearing another form of expérimental. It's a little classier because he added wax print to the hems of his pants.
Where was the last trip you took that inspired you style-wise?
London. It's great for diverse looks and styles and new ways to wear clothes. We really want to go to Italy next. Photo: Julien Babigeon

Nesrine: At university in France.
What did you do tonight?
Nesrine: We tried to go to Colette, but there are too many people to get in. We got here too late.
Where do you like to shop?
Aya: I go to French Trotters pretty often. It's got everything and it's not far from where I live.
Nesrine: I like to shop when I go to Tokyo because the style's more original than here. I go about once a year. I go shopping online too, on ASOS.
What's your shopping philosophy?
Nesrine: If I like it, I buy it. I don't really have a style. I mix anything and everything. Photo: Julien Babigeon

Nine.
Is this your first Fashion Week pregnant?
Yes. Well, it's my first pregnancy.
Are you going to do things a little more low key?
Yes, I'm not leaving for New York tomorrow, which I have been doing for fifteen years. I'll follow everything online.
Are you going to shows in Paris?
I hope so, we'll see.
Which ones are you most looking forward to?
Like everybody, Saint Laurent, Dior … And then Olympia Le-Tan is always great, Julien David … there are many, many.
What are you wearing tonight?
Comme des Garçons. You don't have to wear maternity clothes! And the bunny necklace is by Katie Hillier.
Do you always do FNO?
It's Colette's first Fashion's Night Out, because it's the first time it's in our neighborhood. We're very happy. In the past, I was always in New York during FNO. Although we did participate in the one at the Ace Hotel with Opening Ceremony two years ago.
What have you been buying a lot of lately?
Food. I'm always very into desserts.
What was the last thing you bought yourself?
Now I buy a lot of things for the baby.
Is it a boy or a girl?
It's a boy. Photo: Julien Babigeon

Where's your name from?
I've got Thai and Cambodian roots.
What did you do tonight?
I came to see my colleagues.
Did you buy your outfit at Zara?
No, it's from all over. If I pass a store that looks interesting, I take the time to see it. I bought my Doc Martens for 40 euros in a thrift store. Isn't that a good deal? Seriously, they're in perfect shape.
What about your socks?
Volcom. Look! Take a photo of them! Aren't they cool?
What do you buy too much of?
Cigarettes. Photo: Julien Babigeon

Where have you been tonight?
We went to Manoush and Yves Saint Laurent. We got here late.
What's the last thing you bought?
Yesterday I bought a huge fur coat, dyed blue-gray with raglan sleeves. It's really, really pretty. Short. It's vintage. We've already been preparing winter for six months so we can't wait any longer. Photo: Julien Babigeon
