Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls has been renewed for a third season, Judd Apatow reveals in a recent interview with The Hot Button in promotion of his new movie This Is 40. Apatow says (at the interview’s 34-minute mark), “We’re about to shoot the third season of Girls. Season 2 starts in January.†It’s a rare move for a network to pick up a show for an additional season before the latest season has aired, but given Girls’ popularity with critics, audiences, and awards voters alike, it makes sense that HBO would give the series an early renewal. The best news about all this? We can look forward to at least two more years of Girls thinkpieces.
