In the midst of a media-wide spree to get valuable opinions about the sudden, galaxy-shattering news that Disney (Disney!) will very shortly roll out a new Star Wars trilogy picking up where Return of the Jedi left off, Entertainment Weekly scored a chat with Mark “But I Was Going into Tosche Station to Pick Up Some Power Convertersâ€Â Hamill. While Hamill was as surprised by everyone about Lucasfilm’s sale to Disney, he’s been privy to the existence of more Star Wars since August. After being summoned to lunch alongside Carrie Fisher, Hamill got the news straight from George Lucas: “We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX.†As to whether Hamill gets to reprise his role, “until we know more, it’s hard to make any comment other than congratulations to George.â€
But how did young Skywalker react to the idea of extending the canon? “I was just gobsmacked. ‘What? Are you nuts?’ I can see both sides of it. Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be — and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material,†Hamill says. “I have mixed feelings about [the sale to Disney], but they haven’t done badly by Marvel and the Muppets and Pixar. It’s one of those big decisions that at first seems unusual but then the more you look at it, the more it makes sense.†No editorial addendum as to whether Hamill delivered that last part in the Jedi mind trick, “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for†voice.Â
