Mitt Romney’s Loss Gives Jason Sudeikis an Excuse to Leave ‘SNL’ Early

Jason Sudeikis has been hinting at leaving SNL lately, but as Entertainment Weekly observes, Mitt Romney’s loss yesterday gives him an easy out. Sudeikis has been portraying Romney since the election kicked off last year and is currently signed on to the show through January. Lorne Michaels recently spoke to EW about Sudeikis, saying, “He’s absolutely essential. I love him. I hope he stays a long time.†Sudeikis may be inspired to leave by the recent departures of Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg, who both joined SNL a few months after he did in 2005, and by his booming movie career. Horrible Bosses was the third highest-grossing comedy of last year, and he has parts in three big upcoming movies, We’re the Millers, Relanxious, and the aptly-titled This Is Where I Leave You. There’s been no official word on when Jason Sudeikis will leave the show. He’ll be around until at least January but may end up staying until the season ends in May or for additional seasons. No matter what happens, we’ll be seeing a lot more of Sudeikis in the future. The same can’t be said of Mitt Romney, who began to fade into obscurity last night.
