Contrary to what good kid, m.A.A.d. city and its narrative glory would have you believe, the video for “Backseat Freestyle†is not Kendrick Lamar hanging out in a car and spitting alongside his buddies in Compton. It’s K-Dot in a hotel beneath a replica of The Last Supper, K-Dot getting a haircut, K-Dot spending time with amiable ladies. And while the skit-heavy m.A.A.d city does live up to its subtitle (A Short Film by Kendrick Lamar), it’s certainly nice to get a visual glimpse at that irate dad just looking for his damn Domino’s. We also finally get introduced to Sherane, who appears to have a deeper appreciation for shaking it than we would’ve guessed. It all wraps at the Eiffel Tower at night, American flag in tow.
