The nominees for Best Picture this year are hybrids, combinations of genres and styles: a little rom-com here, a dash of costume drama there, and a sprinkle of eighties sitcom way over there. Some, like Django Unchained, wear their mixture on their bloody sleeve, but for many of the nominees, it’s much subtler.
