In the lead-up to the release of Spring Breakers, which came out nationwide this weekend, Selena Gomez made the press rounds in getups that are decidedly more “I Am Woman” than we’re used to seeing on her. While this transformation can probably be attributed to the fact that she is, of course, growing up, she seems to be purposely trying to shed some of her old Disney-princess, Justin Bieber–girlfriend persona. Besides tiny crop tops and enough sideboob to get her excommunicated from Mickey Mouse’s weekly game night, Selena’s wearing labels. She’s recently chosen red-carpet outfits from Reem Acra, Pucci, and Dolce & Gabbana as if to send the message that she is a mature actress who can play a mature role and she’s going to wear real, mature-actress, expensive clothes. To get the full effect, take a look back at what Selena wore in the Wizards of Waverly Place first-fame era versus the looks she’s chosen during the promotion of Spring Breakers. The magic of Disney, indeed.

January 2008; February 2013 Here we have two outfits that involve vests. She's opted not to bring back the shorts-over-jeans look, but instead went for a businesslike tuxedo that's actually not businesslike at all, considering the front panel is sheer and comes with a gold chain belt.

October 2008; March 2013 For the premiere of Disney's Tinkerbell, Selena chose an age-appropriate, puce halter dress, which is rather shapeless because, well, she's a kid! For an appearence on Jimmy Kimmel, Selena chose a figure-hugging Antonio Berardi dress that sends this message: Not only is she grownup enough to appear on late-night television, but she also has the bod to wake anyone watching.

July 2007; February 2013 From the begining, Selena has worn exactly what her audience wishes they could be wearing to their crush's big arcade birthday party. In 2007, it was mini vests and white pleather boots; in 2013, it was sultry Dolce & Gabbana.

Selena's looks for the Kids' Choice Awards prove our point succintly: She's evolved from cute tween starlet to someone who can get an Oscar de la Renta runway dress altered to be worn over a pair of white shorts.
