Tucked away in the catchphrase collective of all things artisanal, grass-fed, homegrown, and rustic is an emerging group of talented floral designers, mostly based in Brooklyn. The lifestyle is a busy one, with days starting at 5 a.m., when they’re hustling to the flower markets, and often ending at 8 p.m. While weddings remain their main source of income, most of these girls come from art and fashion backgrounds and often find themselves prop styling for magazines and major designer ad campaigns.
While each of the women we talked to has a distinctly different look, both sartorially and florally, they can all agree on two things: clogs and comfort. Every single girl mentioned the word “uniform,” and they all have a distinct earthy sensibility about their style. Favorites include button-ups, jeans (J Brand and Levis) and clogs (No. 6 and Swedish Hasbeens). Vintage also played a strong role in each florist’s wardrobe. Click through the slideshow for a look at the best-dressed flower girls in town.

Taylor Patterson, 29 “With clothes, I gravitate to cool linear shapes and broad shoulders. When I’m making arrangements, I tend to focus on the shape before color, paying attention to form over texture and material. I wear a lot of dark colors and looser, androgynous cuts. Lots of blazers and button-ups.”

"If I'm not wearing dirty jeans, boots, and my dad's old sweater, this label is my go-to. I love this line because they're well-designed and contemporary, but very wearable, flattering, and versatile. They can go from digging in the dirt to meeting with clients.”
Shoes: Dieppa Restrepo
“I own a lot of Dieppas in a lot of different colors. They go with everything from those dirty jeans to the fancier things in my closet. They're the only shoes I wear besides my boots.”
Necklace: Lizzie Fortunato jewels
“Lizzie and Kathryn Fortunato are my friends, and this is their jewelry line. Lizzie designs really wearable yet unique pieces and I basically love everything they do.” Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

I have this blazer that my boyfriend gave me from a label that doesn’t really exist — Obedient Sons — it’s just too bizarre for him.
Favorite flower?
My favorite flower is this one called flannel flower — it’s creamy white and has soft petals with this silvery stem. It’s like an Australian daisy.
Your aesthetic in one word?
Eclectic. I like to mix. I’m attracted to super-modern things and antiques. I travel and I’ve been able to bring back a lot of stuff. I’m into patterns, and even though I don’t personally wear a lot of them, I like being surrounded by them.
Who are your style icons?
Grace Jones and Annie Lennox in the eighties. Emmylou Harris in the seventies.
What’s your earliest fashion memory?
When I was six I had these white, paint-splattered OshKosh B’Gosh overalls that I would cinch roll at the bottom because my cousin, who was the coolest thing in the world, would cinch roll them, too. I wore them every day. I wish I still had them. Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

Amy Merrick, 28 “I really think about clothes and flowers in the same way — you're telling a story. It’s not just about the flowers you pick out. It’s also about the vase you put them in and the linens you put the vase on. It’s the same way with clothes — it’s not just about shoes or your designer bag or the colors or the clothes, it’s about all the elements. I really love Isabel Marant and I’m a sucker for Ralph Lauren — he really fulfills this American dream.”
--Jeans: Old Levis
“I wear them nearly every day even though they ripped through the back. I just can't give them up.”
Blouse: A vintage forties silk button-up
“There is a thin line between the forties and the nineties which I really appreciate. Plus a daisy print? Done.”
Boots: Swedish Hasbeen clog boots from Steven Alan
“Florists live in clogs as a matter of comfort and these bridge the gap between comfy and classy.” Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

I have two: One is a men’s button-down shirt that's blue and white stripes with a white contrasting collar — it’s been on so many first dates. It’s kind of fitted. Half of the reason I bought it is that the label says “The Italian Mob.” The second is a long forties floral dress with the most beautiful print. It’s long and comfortable but still looks crazy put-together.
Favorite flower? Top three:
A true wild rose, rambling — any rose where I can cut myself.
Lily of the valley — a tiny, humble, incredibly fragrant flower that’s hugely sentimental for me. They grow all over the forest floor at my family’s summer house in New Hampshire.
Poppies: little beautiful silk babies.
Your aesthetic in one word?
Feminine classic tomboy.
Who are your style icons?
Katherine Hepburn. Diane Keaton. Liv Tyler in the nineties — I’m a huge fan of that movie Stealing Beauty. She looks really good in that.
What’s your earliest fashion memory?
I wanted to wear a cheerleading skirt on my first day of kindergarten and cartwheel into class but I knew I couldn’t because everyone would see my underwear. Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

Blouse: Vintage
“My mother passed down her beautiful blouse to me some years ago, and it's been my favorite item of clothing ever since. I love that it’s feminine, classic, and floral all at the same time. It's perfect for jeans but can be dressed up easily, too.”
Jeans: J Brand skinny jeans
“Can't go wrong.”
Shoes: No. 6 clog boots
“I live in clogs. Every day.”
Jewelry: Suippo peaked bangles by Fay Andrada. Vintage turquoise cuffs.
“I've been building my bracelet stack for years — the more the better. I've been accumulating Suippo peaked bangles from my studiomate Fay Andrada. She makes special petite ones for me so they don't slide too far down my hand and get in the way. My favorite items of clothing and jewelry are always vintage scores and gifts!” Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

Garden roses, ranunculus, and I actually really love carnations. I’m trying to bring them back. And I love hellebores — they bloom in winter under the snow.
Who are your style icons?
Totally Stevie Nicks. I love the Biba era. I also have a soft spot for old silent film stars like Marlene Dietrich.
What’s your earliest fashion memory?
I always grew up looking up to my mom. She worked in different fashion houses. I used to want to be a fashion designer. My mom and grandmother made all our clothes, and I still have some of the things she made. Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

Anemone, poppies, garden roses.
How would you describe your own personal style?
Feminine, romantic, and classic.
Who are your style icons?
More than anyone in particular it’s kind of certain artists — art deco, early twentieth century, texture. TEXTURE.
What’s your earliest fashion memory?
It’s not exactly fashion but when I was 6 I had to wear an eye patch because one of my eyes was worse than the other, and I had to train the bad eye to work better. Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

Emily Thompson “I really like things that are ancient and classic and tailored. I mostly wear a kind of uniform — lately I wear really cropped pants and either brogues or loafers — wacky preppy. And I have this really bright tartan Pendleton coat I wear. I like really giant scarves, preferably mohair. I almost always wear a button-up, or what one of my wholesalers refers to as a 'man-collared shirt.'"

Suit: Custom-made
“I’m wearing a suit that was made for me by this wonderful woman [who runs] In House Atelier. I found her through a stylist friend, Melissa Malisa. It’s a copy of vintage suit I have.” Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

I just acquired this weird, heavy tweed, dead stock Yves St. Laurent dirndl skirt.
Favorite flower?
I love roses. I love foliage. I love everything as the seasons change.
Your aesthetic in one word?
General: I like things to feel singular and ancient. Sartorial: I like tailored clothes.
Who are your style icons?
I like to wear my grandmothers's clothes.
What’s your earliest fashion memory?
I was always really particular about my clothes. I have a memory of an ink and green striped polo dress that I wore until it turned into a shirt. Photo: Katherine Wolkoff

Denise Fasanello, 40 “Fashion-wise I need to be able to move around. Besides owning my own business, I’m a working mom. I live in brownstone Brooklyn but I do like a little bit of gilding. I try to have a little pop of color here and there but you do have to have a little bit of a uniform — jeans, clogs, and a tunic-y thing.”

I have a 100 percent linen tunic from Muji and I feel like it’s very much a uniform-y thing.
Favorite flower?
I would say tulips. They have this amazing history but they’re also glamorous.
Your fashion aesthetic?
Clean and simple. Straightforward and authentic.
Who are your style icons?
The mother of all style icons for me is Sophia Loren. She kind of embodies everything I want my flowers to be: glamorous and gorgeous and earthy. She has dirt under her fingernails but also a great cat-eye. Personally I have had a crush on Parker Posey for years. I think that style is defined by the fact that no one else can be you. Authentic.
