Comedian Bo Burnham revealed via Twitter yesterday that his MTV show is more or less done for. The show, Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, is a sitcom that stars Burnham as the title character, a high school grad who foregoes college to turn his life into a reality show. “The final three episodes of Zach Stone will be airing THIS WEEK,†Burnham tweeted. He added:
“For those asking, MTV airing the final 3 [episodes] this week, 2 on Saturday, is most certainly a sign that they won’t order a second season. I am very grateful for and proud of the 12 episodes we’re were allowed to make. And thank you so much to everyone who has watched it. I have had an obscenely lucky life. I am in awe of being able to have made a show and share it with you. Enjoy the end Zach! (for now)â€
Zach Stone premiered in early May but failed to draw huge ratings despite critical acclaim. It’s sad to see the show go, as it deserved more of a chance and this is just another example of MTV’s not-great relationship with comedy. This is the fourth MTV comedy in two years to be canceled after just one season (following The Inbetweeners, I Just Want My Pants Back, and Death Valley), and it’s a shame we won’t get to see where Bo Burnham and company take this with a second year.
UPDATE, PM: MTV announced this afternoon they’ve officially canceled the show.
