Summertime calls for relaxing dips in the ocean, tearful weddings, and unfortunately, sweaty morning commutes. Choosing a mascara for the hottest months of the year means opting for a waterproof formula. Finding the perfect one, however, can be difficult. Not only does it have to lengthen, separate, and add volume to your lashes, it also has to hold up throughout a full day’s activities and be easy to remove at the end of the night.
As an Asian woman, I prefer waterproof mascaras because our lashes tend to be very straight, and angle downward. As time goes on, any curl will slowly weaken and the hair will droop, resulting in telltale smudges under the eye. In the past 12 days, I tried 11 different types. I looked carefully at the quality of the brushes and how well each formula was able to deliver on its promises, especially those that touted the look of fake lashes. For the brands that had indistinguishable effects on my eyes, packaging was the tie-breaker, because design matters.
Following one child’s birthday party, a long night at the office, several outdoor runs, and a wedding during one of the most hot and humid days of the year, some fared better than others. Which deserved a repeat, and which left me mourning the loss of a few lashes? Click ahead to find out.

Not Recommended A fluffy brush that was nicely loaded up with product offered up visions of thick, long lashes, but the formula turned out to be better at separating and lengthening instead. It felt lightweight, but didn't have any impact. It also smudged after a short run on a cool evening, so I'd hate to see how it would fare once the heat and humidity really kicked in.

Not Recommended I really wanted to love this mascara: The gold packaging was so chic resting in my little lucite makeup container. But the thin brush did nothing to add length or volume to my lashes. After three coats, it approximated what others did in one swipe. This would be ideal for someone with lush lashes simply looking for some definition. The formula did hold up nicely through the end of the day, though, and removal was fairly standard – three soaked cotton balls later, my lashes were clean.

Not Recommended With its hefty tube, it felt more substantial than any of the other mascaras – almost like a weapon. But the brush was too thin, meaning I had to load up to get any impact, which only made it that much harder to remove, and I lost a few precious hairs after some vigorous scrubbing.

Not Recommended Despite the thin applicator, the wand gave my lashes volume and length, and they held a curl. Unfortunately, it required four coats to do so, and therefore it felt as if I were wearing a heavy layer of product on my eyes. I found myself blinking constantly, as if I could somehow relieve the pressure on my lashes. To add to the unpleasantness, I had to vigorously, and almost painfully, rub my eyes with multiple cotton balls soaked in remover to get it off, yet I still woke up with remnants on my face.

Not Recommended Unlike all of the other brands, the wand is separate from the rest of this mascara, so I was concerned that it would not grab enough of the formula in the first dip. I was wrong. Just one pump would have been enough to adequately coat the applicator, and I found myself applying too much on my eyes. My lashes looked long and full after one layer, but since I love excess, I tried to apply a second. Unfortunately, it dried too quickly between coats. At the end of the day, a thin black ring appeared below my eyes and would only get worse after a particularly sweaty elliptical session. At least it was easy to wipe off.

Recommended with Reservations Maybe I'm accustomed to the feel of sleek metal, but the quilted leather casing felt strange in my hand. After two coats, my lashes looked appropriately volumized and lengthened. During the day I attended a 1st birthday party that exhausted me so much that I promptly fell asleep in the car on my way home. I woke up raccoon-eye-free, but I could not get over the packaging to reach for it again.

Recommended with Reservations Unlike the other brushes, this has an S shape that was meant to plump up my lashes. I added a third coat, thinking my lashes weren't quite full enough, but the added layer caused some clumping. Anyone looking to simply lengthen, and not thicken, should avoid using this one. Also, I made sure to do a quick swipe of the brush on a tissue to remove some of the excess that had a tendency to clump up on the bristles pre-application. That said, I checked my makeup at 7 P.M. in the office, and while a tiny bit flaked below my eyes, it managed to stay mostly intact. Removal was among the easiest of the bunch.

Recommended with Reservations This one was by far the most successful at providing the false lash effect. I was very impressed by how good my eyes looked after application. But sadly, it smudged a tiny bit towards the end of the day, even though I did nothing sweaty that would cause it to do so. Had it not bled, I would have bumped it up as one of my favorites.

Recommended Unlike all of the other mascaras, I could feel every last nub on the wand as it pressed against my lid and separated my lashes. Two perfectly even coats later, my eyes looked fantastic. The effect was more subtle than the MAC mascara, though each individual hair was nicely emphasized. It would be as close to a natural look as I am willing to try. An added bonus: The classic black and gold packaging looked great on on my lucite tray.

Recommended Everyone I know raves about this mascara, so I had high expectations before I even opened up the tube. The thin wand was surprisingly adept at separating, lengthening, and volumizing my lashes after two coats. Following a late night at the office, the formula held up despite my bad habit of rubbing my eyes repeatedly. I only wished it were a little easier to remove, since I had to go through four cotton balls soaked in makeup remover to get it all off.

All-around Winner The first time I used this mascara, I loved how smoothly it went on – my lashes were nicely separated, and the formula was thick enough to add a good amount of volume. At the end of a long run, my face still looked immaculate, so I found myself reaching for it again when I had to attend a wedding a week later. It added extra oomph to my fake lashes and blended them in perfectly with my real ones. The day also happened to be brutally hot and humid, and my makeup did not budge, even as an errant rainstorm interrupted the ceremony. Removal was a breeze (even in my drunken post-reception haze) and required only a few swipes of a facial wipe.
