Earlier this week, we learned of Sony’s intention to extend the current incarnation of Spider-Man out over four movies. It appears this will greatly impact the first sequel, which is set to be released next May. Namely, Mary Jane, Spider-Man’s main love interest, will no longer be appearing. In the most recent print issue of Entertainment Weekly, Shailene Woodley, the actress set to play MJ, addressed the delay:
“Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason … Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.â€
Director Marc Webb told The Hollywood Reporter that the move was a “creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship.â€Â We’re not sure what this exactly means for the next film plot-wise, but let’s hope it means that Emma Stone gets to stick around longer, and gets super and ditches Peter Parker and becomes the new Spider-Man forever.
