Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss wrote an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for the show’s upcoming ninth season, which starts in September, but it looks like another creator of an award-winning TV drama has an interest in stepping into the Always Sunny writers room: Mad Men’s Matthew Weiner.
In a NY Times piece about the Game of Thrones guys working on the show, Always Sunny creator Rob McElhenney says Matthew Weiner has been “threatening to write an episode.†Weiner may be known for his drama work on Mad Men and as a writer/producer on The Sopranos, but he got his start in comedy, writing for shows like Becker and Andy Richter Controls the Universe. Weiner’s first movie is also a comedy. Called You Are Here, it stars Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis and is currently awaiting release. Asked about his Always Sunny involvement, Weiner said, “We’re discussing it. I don’t think I’m allowed to write anything for any other TV show right now.†But with Mad Men expected to end its run with its impending seventh season, maybe he’ll be able to squeeze an Always Sunny episode in after he’s done.
