It’s been one year since Diane Von Furstenberg sent Google Glass down the runway. Since then, they’ve been featured in Vogue, worn by multiple fashion editors, and plugged by the Times’ Styles section. Meanwhile, Samsung just released a smartwatch, and apparently Jawbone is sending sleep- and calorie-tracking wristbands to editors and buyers. (Says Vanity Fair’s Punch Hutton: “I don’t want to know.”) This Fashion Week, the Cut wonders whether wearable gadgets will ever be acceptable — or even covetable — accessories, in the realm of Prada peeptoes or a Cartier bracelet.
Responses from fashion show attendees were mixed: Vogue’s Hamish Bowles proposed that a teal ostrich band, similar to the one on his own Boucheron, would greatly improve his chances of wearing a smartwatch, while T’s Deborah Needleman noted the sorry aesthetic of Google glass. “They could not be uglier,” she said. “It’s like, the worst kind of German architect nerd glasses.” We agree, but it didn’t stop Marie Claire’s intrepid Nina Garcia from wearing them all week. Click ahead to find out who still uses a BlackBerry, who obsessively tracks their REM via Jawbone (what?), and who thinks Google Glass is already “very three seasons ago.”

W magazineDo you think that Google Glass could be cool? It’s all about who is wearing them, and what they are wearing them with. And what kind of attitude they have. You know, everything can be cool. Would you wear them? Um, right now I don’t have a specific reason to do it. I don’t think it’s an accessory that I want to add to my no-accessory kind of philosophy!

Yeah, I can totally see that. It’s more subtle. It integrates better.

Marie ClaireSo your fashion director, Nina Garcia, is wearing Google glass all week. Have you tried them? Yes, I’ve worn them. We’re all so connected to our phones that having your hands free and being able to look up all the time is really liberating. And they’re so light. It’s the opposite of distracting. PaperGoogle glass. Do you think that they’re going to be cool? When Diane von Furstenberg had them in her show, it was amazing because it was like, Wow! Something new. But now that it’s been a few seasons, we fashion people are such jaded bitches, I’m afraid I saw someone was wearing them somewhere and I was a little bit like, “That’s very three seasons ago.” So I think for them to take off, they need to feel new. They’re not even out, but they’re already old. One day you’re in, and the next day you’re out! Photo: Stephen Lovekin/2013 Getty Images

VogueWhat would your ideal smartwatch look like? HB: Probably not unlike this Boucheron, and ideally with a sort of dusty teal ostrich band. And what would be the most important app to have on it? VS: Time would be good. You know what [Hamish] would need? A smartwatch that tells you: Hamish, get up right now and leave your desk, go to the car. Hamish and I share a car together. Sometimes he is challenged on getting to places on time. HB: Timing alerts would be useful. So [Virginia] would need the batline to Hamish’s watch. VS: Yes: Hamish. Harper’s Bazaar, V magazineWould you ever wear a smartwatch? Is that the thing that counts your calories? It could be, if it had the right app. Oh, the new Samsung thing. I use a Blackberry. I’m so behind on mobile communication technology, I think a smartwatch may be too far a leap.

SARAH EASLEY AND BETH BUCCINI, co-owners, Kirna ZabeteWould you ever wear a smartwatch? BB: How do you take a picture with it? That seems a bit odd to be flailing your arm. SE: She’s more concerned with her sleep than her workout, frankly. [Pointing at Beth.] You wear something that calculates your sleep? SE: Sleep, and how many steps she takes, because she has four kids and a big job and she’s very busy. BB: It’s an Up Band. I’m obsessed with how much deep sleep I get versus how much light sleep. Yesterday, I moved 10,000 steps and I slept seven hours and eighteen minutes. I was awake two times, for 22 minutes. Those were children in the bed.

TGoogle glass – any thoughts? I saw Nina Garcia in them today. They’re super un-chic. They could not be uglier. It’s like the worst kind of German architect nerd glasses. Have you tried them? I have, and I couldn’t make it work. I kept telling it to do things and take pictures of things and it wouldn’t do what I asked. It was like a bad Siri experience. But my friend said when I was using his that the battery was low. Photo: Venturelli/2013 Venturelli
