Last night, Giorgio Armani (or Mr. Armani, as he is perennially known) announced his arrival in New York with a party called One Night Only, despite the fact he’s clearly sticking around for a few days. It’s his first visit to the city since 2009, and so he had wooed Leonardo DiCaprio, Glenn Close, Olivia Munn, Bridget Jones Renée Zellweger, and other famous clients out to the giant warehouse space on the West Side Highway now known as the SuperPier. Two things stood out: First, that Armani and his Italian friends, all wearing black suits and white shirts and black skinny ties or black gowns, carpeted the entire space in a plush, off-white carpet; many editors and socialites said that it felt like a very fancy prom, or a bar mitzvah, or a wedding that they had crashed. This was not meant as an insult, because the other surprising thing is that everyone was dancing. It’s rare at these events — despite the flowing Champagne and dark chocolate on trays — to see anyone looking like they’re having any real fun, the kind they have on weekends with friends. But, for one night only, the energy was infectious. Maybe because it started at 10:30 p.m., a ballsy weeknight request. Ahead, pictorial evidence.
