Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel may be moving faster than you thought: Even though the filmmaker only recently cast Ben Affleck as Batman and major production isn’t supposed to get under way until the New Year, the movie is actually shooting some football-game scenes this weekend, suggesting that Snyder already has most of his film’s essential crew members in place. Still, there’s one important talent left who still hasn’t figured out whether he’s returning for another go-round: Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer, who was brought on to the first Man of Steel by producer Christopher Nolan, for whom he scored all three Dark Knight movies.
“Honestly, I’m just sort of grappling with that right now,†Zimmer told Vulture on Monday (as part of a larger profile to run later this year). “Quite seriously, the thought right now is that no, I don’t want to go and take what I did with Chris and just plonk it into another movie. There isn’t one good reason to do it, and there are so many good reasons not to do it.â€
In general, Zimmer says, he’s a little burned out on the notion of sequels after working on so many movies in the Dark Knight and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises. “I didn’t really enjoy myself much on Pirates 4,†Zimmer admitted. “And I love that with The Dark Knight Rises, Chris said, ‘That’s it.’â€
If he does end up scoring Superman’s matchup with Batman, Zimmer said it’ll be solely because of the man in charge. “I really enjoyed working with Zack Snyder, so part of it would be a personal decision,†he said. “At the same time, I wouldn’t want to put the ideas I used in the Chris Nolan Batman movies into a Superman movie. It just wouldn’t feel right.â€
In any case, he’s still got time to figure it out. “I’m a procrastinator, and right now, I don’t want to make a decision,†Zimmer said with a chuckle. “Zack hasn’t talked to me about it, so I don’t have to worry about it! I’ll worry about it when I have to worry about it, and then, if I’m lucky, I’ll have an idea. If I have an idea, I can do something with that, but if I don’t have an idea, then my good idea is going to be, ‘Get somebody else.’â€
